Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing designed to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness. It is celebrated by a priest when a person is seriously ill, elderly, awaiting serious surgery or dying. The priest anoints the person on the head and hands with blessed oil and prays for God to bless and heal the sick person.
Through the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, priests and the whole Church commend those who are ill to the merciful care of our suffering and glorified Lord. This sacrament gains grace for the sick person and assures them that God may raise them up and save them.
The priest will anoint you on the head and hands with blessed oil and will pray for God to bless and heal you. Some things people have reported feeling during or after this sacrament are:
All of those - or others - are perfectly normal signs of God's grace present in this sacrament. While we can't predict how God might bless you, we know that everyone who comes to the Lord with an open heart asking for healing receives something!
Catholics who are very sick or at the point of death may request the Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament is particularly appropriate for anyone who has a physical or emotional illness or an upcoming medical procedure. A person may receive this sacrament more than once if they become very sick again.
